Chapter 12
That afternoon I watched the trees fly past the truck window as Corey drove us toward the farm. The morning and early afternoon had gone in a direction I hadnât imagined would ever be possible. As the memories played over in my mind, I closed my eyes, pressed my head against the rest, a genuine smile of happiness, contentment, pulled along the corners of my lips. There were no thoughts of confusion, no feelings of dread, no, for the first time since my brother had passed, I felt as though I had been where I was meant to be.
I woke that morning in Coreyâs arms, and although that had become a semi-normal thing since I moved into the loft, that morning meant so much more.
We were in my old house, my familyâs home, my childhood bed. He had stayed with me all night and ensured I felt safe, secure, peaceful. When we woke, we showered together, there was no wild sex, but we shared passion under the hot water. He caressed the dip of my back, held me close as his lips glided down the nape of my neck with gentleness.
After we dressed, we walked hand in hand to the dining room where my parents were already sipping on their coffee and reading the local paper. My mother had made breakfast, bacon, and eggs, and greeted us with a smile as we walked into the room. Corey kissed me softly before I took my seat between my parents as he fixed my plate and my coffee just how I liked it. We talked as a family, laughed, and revealed our plans for the day when I had spoken words, I never thought I would.
âIf youâre not busy, maybe we could go visit Noah.â The shock of my father's had been clear in an instant. My mother froze with her coffee mug in mid-air before it had a chance to touch her lips. My heartbeat elevated and as I started to take back the words, Corey spoke in his beautiful raspy voice.
âI think thatâs a wonderful idea, baby.â Oh great, I thought. Could I do that? All I needed was to freak out and allow Corey to see the real crazy person he slept with every night. I began to hope my parents had something else more pressing to do, but I knew when it came to Noah that wouldnât be the case. My eyes darted to my mother who sat still frozen for minutes, tears built up in her eyes.
My father cleared his throat and lowered his paper before he nodded and let out a slow exhale. He never spoke a word as he pushed from the table and grabbed his coffee cup. I looked over at Corey, who sat with a smile across his face when my father left the table. I found myself praying for Britney to call us back to the farm but as chance would have had it, that call never came.
âFifteen minutes.â My father spoke only two words before he left the room.
